The town was originally called Beodericsworth and was one of the royal towns of the Saxons. It is known for its ruined Abbey near to the town centre that was founded in 633 which in 903 became the burial place of King Edmund, who was slain by the Danes in 869. The town grew around the Abbey and developed local industries such as wool and cloth making. Some noteworthy buildings in the town include St Marys Church where Mary Tudor and the sister of King Henry VIII are buried and Moreton Hall.

There are many cultural and leisure activities on offer for tourists and visitors to the town including Moyses Hall Museum, St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Abbey Gardens, The Theatre Royal, Greene King Brewery Museum, West Stow Anglo-Saxon village, Clare Castle Country Park, Lackford Lakes and Hardwick Heath. The town is characterised by medieval streets and has a country village atmosphere mixed together with independant shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. There is also a twice-weekly award-winning market that sells a variety items such as fresh produce, housewares and flowers.
